App Works on a Phone Hotspot but Not on Home Wi-Fi: What That Tells You

One test, two networks. The result points you to the app, the TV, the router or your internet provider.

Illustration of a router with Wi-Fi signal arcs above it.

Quick answer

If the same TV and the same app work on your phone's hotspot but fail on your home Wi-Fi, that points to your home network, not to the app or the TV: the router, a setting on it, or your internet provider. Restart the modem and router first, then work down the checks below. The test logic is our editorial guidance. The restart order and the Ethernet and DNS tests come from Amazon and Samsung.

Applies to

Devices
Any TV or streaming device that can join a phone hotspot
Apps
Any streaming app

Partly checked against official documentation (see Sources) on October 29, 2026. Steps marked “Not documented by the maker” are not confirmed. Not tested on a real device by us. Menu names can differ by model and software version.

Do the test properly#

The test only means something if only the network changes. Use the same device, the same app and the same account.

  1. Turn on the hotspot on your phone.
  2. On the TV or streaming device, join the hotspot, as you would any Wi-Fi network.
  3. Open the app and try to play something for a minute.
  4. Switch the TV back to your home Wi-Fi and try again.

Samsung's support page lists a hotspot, an Ethernet cable or another Wi-Fi network as ways to test an app that is not working.

What the result means#

This table is our own editorial reasoning, not a manufacturer's diagnosis.

Hotspot Home Wi-Fi What it points to Go to
Works Fails Your home network Home network checks
Fails Fails Not the network. Look at the app, your account or the device Fire TV: apps will not load
Works Works The problem has gone. It may have been temporary Try again later, at the time it usually fails
Fails Works The hotspot is the limit, for example your mobile plan. Your home network looks fine Nothing to fix at home

If it works on the hotspot only#

Work down the list. Stop when the app works.

  1. Restart the modem and router. Amazon's order, in its Fire TV help: unplug both and wait 1 minute, plug in the modem first and wait about 1 minute, then plug in the router and wait about 1 minute.
  2. Test another device on the same Wi-Fi. Open the same app on your phone while it is connected to your home Wi-Fi.
    • If it fails there too, the problem is more likely the router or the internet line. Go to step 4.
    • If it works there, only this TV has the problem. Forget the Wi-Fi network on the TV and join it again, and move the TV or the router closer. Amazon suggests moving a Fire TV and the router closer for a stronger signal.
  3. Try a cable if your TV has a network port. Samsung's support page suggests testing with Ethernet. Samsung says that if the app works on Ethernet, the problem may be the TV's Wi-Fi.
  4. Look at your router settings (see the box below).
  5. Check the TV's DNS setting. Samsung's Australian support page lists setting the DNS by hand as one of its steps when an app does not work. Write down the current settings first so that you can change them back.
  6. Turn off any VPN on the TV or streaming device for one test.
  7. Ask your internet provider. If nothing in the router explains it, ask your provider whether they filter or block that service on your line.

If nothing helps#

  1. Note what you tried and what changed. Include the router model and the exact message on the screen.
  2. Send those details to the app's support, and to your internet provider if the hotspot test pointed at your home network.
  3. For a Tellyro account, message us with the device, the app and the result of the test.
