Fire TV Screen Frozen? Restart It Without Opening Settings

Amazon's two ways to restart a frozen Fire TV without opening Settings, and the separate checks to run when there is no picture at all.

Quick answer

Hold the Select and Play/Pause buttons on the remote together for about 5 seconds. If that does not help, unplug the Fire TV's power cord for 60 seconds and plug it back in. No picture at all is a different problem: check the HDMI input first.

If a Fire TV screen is frozen and you cannot open Settings, Amazon documents a restart shortcut that you can use from the remote.

Restart with the remote#

Hold the Select and Play/Pause buttons together for about 5 seconds. Select is the centre button of the navigation ring.

Wait for the device to start again, then check whether you can move around the home screen.

If that does not help#

Unplug the Fire TV's power cord, leave it unplugged for 60 seconds, then plug it back in.

No picture at all?#

A missing picture needs a different check. Amazon recommends:

  • Using the power cable and adapter that came with the device.
  • Checking that the TV is set to the HDMI input that the Fire TV uses. Use the source or input button on the TV's own remote.
  • Connecting the Fire TV straight into the TV's HDMI port rather than through an HDMI hub.
  • Replacing the remote's batteries.

Is Select plus Play/Pause a factory reset?#

No. Amazon describes it as a restart. Do not swap in a different button combination from an unrelated reset video.

What if it keeps freezing?#

Note whether it freezes on the home screen or only inside one app. If it only struggles while one app plays video, Fire TV buffering in one app is the next place to look. For anything else, use Amazon's support page, because a restart cannot promise to resolve an underlying fault.
