Fire TV Remote Not Pairing During Setup? Try These Checks

Amazon's first checks when a Fire TV remote will not pair during setup: distance, the Home button, batteries, a power restart, and which reset page to use.

Quick answer

Keep the remote within 3 metres (10 feet) of the Fire TV and hold Home. After about 10 seconds the screen should ask you to press Play/Pause. If nothing happens, remove the batteries for 30 seconds, then try a fresh pair of alkaline batteries.

If the remote will not pair during Fire TV setup, start with distance and batteries before you try a reset. These steps follow Amazon's pairing guidance.

Try these checks in order#

  1. Keep the remote within 3 metres (10 feet) of the Fire TV.
  2. Hold the Home button. After about 10 seconds the screen should show a prompt asking you to press Play/Pause.
  3. If nothing changes, remove the remote's batteries and wait 30 seconds. Put them back in and hold Home again.
  4. Try a fresh pair of alkaline batteries and repeat the pairing attempt.

Watch the television for confirmation rather than relying only on a light on the remote.

Still stuck?#

Amazon's page also suggests unplugging the Fire TV for five seconds and plugging it back in. A Fire TV can have up to seven controllers paired. If seven are already paired, remove one before you add another.

Do not use a random reset combination#

Amazon lists different reset instructions for most Fire TV remotes, for the Basic Edition Remote and for the first-generation Alexa Voice Remote. Find which one you have and use the matching section of Amazon's reset page, listed in the sources below.

Does this cover a replacement remote?#

This guide is about first-time setup. Before you assume that a newly bought remote suits your Fire TV, check its compatibility and Amazon's separate instructions for replacement remotes.
